Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) president Farizan Darus said the state government had agreed to extend the temporary licences for swiftlet breeders operating in residential premises in the state by another year after the expiry of the licences on Dec 31 last year.

He advised the 499 breeders to apply for the extension, adding that the state government had also frozen the issuance of new licences for swiftlet breeders.

Pahang freezes swiftlet breeding licences

KUANTAN: No new licences have been issued for swiftlet commercial nesting activities in major towns in Pahang since June last year.

Such activities are only allowed in the outskirts of towns.

However, those with permits to operate such swiftlet nesting activities in towns obtained prior to the date can continue to do so provided they abide by the rules and regulations stipulated under the local government by-laws.

State Agriculture, Agro-based Industries and Felda Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Tan Aminuddin Ishak said city dwellers had raised concerns over several issues linked to such activities.

“Questions over the risk of disease, bird droppings, town cleanliness, noise pollution, devaluation of property prices and depreciation in the quality of life must be addressed before any venture can take place.

“This is to avoid problems that may arise after one has spent a lot to establish the business only to be told later to close and move elsewhere,” he told reporters after opening a course on swiftlet nesting places at Seri Malaysia Hotel here yesterday.

Commercial nesting of swiftlets is a lucrative business due to high demand for bird’s nest, which is considered a delicacy among the Chinese.

In his speech earlier, Tan Aminuddin said the swiftlet business generated an annual trade of about RM500mil in the country. In Pahang alone, it was worth some RM36mil.
Bird’s nests can fetch between RM1,000 and RM2,000 a kilo, he added.

In Pahang, 1,484 premises had been converted into nesting places involving 1,036 operators, he said
